Parent Information

Refined Learning is an online private tuition service that aims to make online tutoring truly beneficial to your child, going above and beyond the usual standard of online tutoring, which can often be dull, repetitive and unproductive.

What we provide

We provide engaging, adaptable one-to-one lessons and pride ourselves on listening to feedback from both you, as a parent or carer, and your child, on any aspect of our sessions. After each lesson we give our own feedback, with updates on your child’s progress and future goals.

Success doesn’t happen overnight, which is why we value practice outside lessons so much. As well as teaching engaging lessons, we provide plenty of learning resources and revision material:

  • Pre-recorded videos
  • Step-by-step example sheets
  • Short quizzes
  • Worksheets
  • Links and directions to further practice and materials

To make sure children are ready for their exams, whether it’s the 11+ or their SATs, we provide realistic practice questions and exams tailored to your child’s examination board.

Bundle plan: best value per lesson

  • You pay monthly, at a discounted rate, for a bundle of lessons.
  • You choose, from our available slots, the best time for a regular weekly session.
  • A £10 deposit is set aside for each lesson in case of cancellation.
  • Ideal for committed learners who want consistent progress.

Payment is made regularly on an agreed date each month. Lessons can’t be provided without payment.

Pay as you go: maximum flexibility

  • You pay the full price per lesson, with no monthly commitment.
  • A slightly larger deposit (£15) is taken to allow for less regular bookings.
  • You can keep a regular weekly slot, or book any available slot across the week. 48 hours’ notice is preferred, but sessions may still be possible at shorter notice.
  • With 48 hours’ notice you can book an extra session at any available time.
  • No deposit is lost when you give adequate notice of a cancellation.

Payment should be made at least 24 hours before the lesson. If an extra lesson is booked at short notice, payment is due as soon as the booking is confirmed.

Cancellations, missed sessions and rescheduling

Cancelling a session

A standard cancellation must be made at least 48 hours before the session.

  • Bundle plan: a standard cancellation is refunded, minus the deposit, up to the number of cancellations your bundle allows. Further cancellations in the same month are non-refundable. Individual lessons can be cancelled, but not a whole bundle.
  • Pay as you go: a standard cancellation is refunded in full. If cancellations become frequent or repeated, a non-refundable deposit may be applied for a period, always with clear warning and notice.

Missed sessions

If a student misses a session without any notice, the full deposit is kept to cover the time set aside and the tutor’s preparation. On a bundle plan, no money is refunded for a missed session. On pay as you go, your payment is refunded minus the deposit.

Rescheduling

To change the regular day or time of a weekly session, please give 4 days’ notice. If something unexpected comes up, a one-off reschedule may be possible with 24 hours’ notice. On irregular pay as you go bookings, moving a session to the next day may be possible.

Rescheduling always depends on availability and isn’t guaranteed. If a rescheduled session is then missed, more than the deposit may be kept, at our discretion depending on the circumstances.

If your tutor misses a session

You’ll receive a full refund for that lesson, and we apologise for any inconvenience.

Referred Learning: refer a friend

When you refer a friend, they get 20% off their first three lessons, and as a thank you, you can earn up to three lessons at 20% off.

  • Your friend needs to give us your first and last name, by text or email, before their introductory assessment.
  • If your friend buys any bundle, you receive all three discounted lessons straight away, to use on your next purchase.
  • If your friend chooses pay as you go, you receive one discounted lesson for each of their first three lessons.

What your child needs

Some lessons may need extra equipment, but these are the basics for every lesson:

  • A computer, tablet, laptop or phone to join the online session (a larger screen is best)
  • A pencil and rubber, and a pen if they normally use one
  • A ruler
  • A book, notepad or plenty of paper for working out
  • A desk or table to write at
  • Some water

How you can help

Getting the most from lessons isn’t only down to your child. As their parent or carer, you can help by:

  1. Choosing times of day when they’re most ready to learn.
  2. Providing a peaceful, comfortable place to learn.
  3. Taking a quiet 5–10 minutes before each session to help them settle and check they have the right equipment.
  4. Making sure their device is fully charged.
  5. Keeping other devices, such as mobile phones, out of the room to avoid distractions.
  6. Making time for short, regular study using the resources we provide, to build speed and confidence.
  7. Celebrating and rewarding their achievements and hard work as they progress.
  8. Encouraging educational games in their free time for extra practice.

Behaviour and respect

We expect students to be polite and respectful to our staff. Enforcing good behaviour isn’t the tutor’s responsibility, so we ask parents and carers to take responsibility if there’s repeated disruption or rude behaviour.

If a tutor is made to feel uncomfortable by uncooperative behaviour, they may end the session early. The incident will be reviewed, and if ending the session was justified, that session won’t be refunded. Repeated or serious incidents may mean we can no longer provide lessons; we may be able to switch tutors, depending on the circumstances.

Abuse of any kind from parents or carers towards our staff won’t be tolerated, and funds may be withheld depending on the nature of the incident. Extreme incidents may be reported to the police.

Safeguarding

We take safeguarding seriously. If any safeguarding concern is made known to us, we will contact the relevant safeguarding authorities. We take every reasonable measure to keep your child safe:

  • Everyone your child works with has completed safeguarding training.
  • All lessons are recorded and kept for at least 30 days if no disputes or behavioural issues are raised.
  • Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately and that their surroundings are suitable for a lesson.
  • We ask that a parent or carer stays within earshot for the whole of each online session.

How we handle lesson recordings and your personal information is explained in our Privacy Policy.
